So behind the scenes, (relative to the mailing list at least) there's
been lots going on. That's great, but it would be nice to hear about it,
here in the main list not via I.R.C. which as I have said, I do use for
up to the minute things, but not ongoing projects (especially year old
ones).
I.R.C. is great, it serves many important purposes and is a great
'hangout' if you like that kind of thing and a great place to get help.
But for me it is not a place I can spend much time in as I haven't the
time to sit and read the stream of chat coming through or go back every
day and read the logs just in case something interesting or important is
being talked about.
I.R.C. is a place to go and find pertinent information, not announce it.
Mailing lists are the places to 'announce' things of interest to the
group that they should know, in my opinion.
I have seen many fun but irrelevant topics talked about on I.R.C.
including pizza toppings. I'm not tuning into that just to keep up to
date with the groups real projects.
There's also time differences/zones to take into account.
And on...
It seems to me so few want to run active websites within this
network. So OpenNIC basically boils down to an open, alternative D.N.S.
resolver (which is now struggling under the weight of D.O.S. attacks)
and an alternative root that does nothing but create (effectively) empty
T.L.D.s. It seems it's merely a platform for people to play at being
coders and administrators.
Hopefully now OpenNIC has a good search engine (seek.geek) things might
change, but there still needs to be the content to bring people in,
which is sorely lacking and do you really think others can, will or even
should start it all off?
And on...
The core membership is way too quiet in my opinion, many topics come up
where help and guidance from experienced 'elders' would be good, but
instead they sit in silence. Not very communal or committed (to the real
goals, as opposed to their personal goals.
Yes, I know you write lots of lovely code and keep the root ticking
along as well as the main web site and wiki, mailing list etc, but
come on, get on the front line!
And before you start shouting, "but we are made up of volunteers, we
don't have the time!" (an old one I have heard too many times). For any
of OpenNIC, whether it be the 'elders' not offering sage advice and
opinion, or others failing to keep their services running or deadlines,
I suggest you shouldn't have put yourself in such a position if you
can't commit to it.
And on...
So, for me, my time volunteering for OpenNIC has come to an end. This is
not a new thought and is only exasperated, not caused by the .pirate
bullshit. (Travis, I would imagine the real pirate movement wishes you
would keep your nose out - you do it more harm than good).
I will no longer be helping to run the T2 with Jon Plews though he says
he will keep it running.
I also no longer offer help with the main OpenNIC website either (and
will try to delete myself from the user list - I'm not sure how that'll
work out).
I will be closing chatter.ing and sweetdemon.geek as well as
nanohost.free, the latter meaning I no longer offer hosting for
OpenNIC websites. Yeah, all no great loss...
I also am unsubscribing from the mailing lists (as soon as this
message is sent).
And on...
It's been fun as well as infuriating volunteering here and I have
learned many things (and not all about D.N.S.) I have met some great
people and made some lovely friends.
I still believe in some of what OpenNIC stands for and will keep my
personal domain including associated mail addresses and possibly use
the resolvers, (unless there ceases to be an open one to use).
And...
The above in the main is simply my opinion and not necessarily correct,
but for me my opinion counts as something to evaluate (my) actions upon.
No longer volunteering for the OpenNIC network is that action in this
case.
Blah blah blah...
Peter
