Hello ladies and gents, I've been quiet for the amount of time I've been
on the mailing list but I think I'm ready to step forward with a
proposal. .chan, or dotchan as I'll refer to it in the rest of the
proposal, would be a TLD for imageboards and imageboard culture. In
referring to imageboards, I refer to communities like 4chan, 8chan,
lainchan, and others that are defined by comparatively liberal posting
rules and the ability to post content and discuss thread topics
anonymously. The goal of the TLD would be to create a TLD for content
related to the emergent culture of these sites and for their userbase.
This includes not only imageboards, but also boorus, personal blogs,
software projects, and other types of content originating from or
targeting imageboard users.

The proposal was originally suggested on 8chan's /tech/ board, and a
team has been assembled of volunteers who have pledged technical support
and hosting. I've also found a good amount of people who are interested
in using a .chan domain as an alternative to their ICANN ones, which
after the seizure of 8chan.co by its registrar have come under scrutiny
as a method of censorship. We've also started to discuss the uses of the
domain with people interested in creating new content for the namespace,
including a novel anonymous social network, on such a domain.

.chan creates an entry-point and gateway for the imageboard community to
start discussing and utilizing OpenNIC. Networks like Tor and i2p have
large overlaps in population from imageboard communities, the
demographic of which is generally more technically savvy and more
concerned with privacy and security than others. Should this proposal be
accepted, it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that OpenNIC would
receive a greater amount of attention than it ever has previously, and
it is even more likely that users introduced to OpenNIC through .chan
sites will register and utilize sites across the OpenNIC network of domains.

"A DNS Provider that respects your freedoms" is something I've started
with whenever I've brought up OpenNIC in threads and discussions with
fellow anons. Almost every time, I gain an immediate convert to OpenNIC.
By creating a .chan TLD, I feel we would gain the attention of an
audience more receptive to the purpose and cause of OpenNIC than any other.

"If you build it, they will come."
