Hello,
My name is Emre Çelik, though I am known online as EMREOYUN. I'm a Computer Engineering graduate from TED University in Ankara, Türkiye. I worked in the university’s IT Department for three years prior to graduation and have been operating servers for nearly ten years for various purposes. Although my formal education includes software development, I'm really interested in servers, the internet, networking, and IT stuff, in which I improved myself in these topics. I first discovered OpenNIC during my research in the summer of 2025. Among the available TLDs, .o particularly stood out to me. However, repeated attempts to register a .o domain (Summer 2025, Autumn 2025, and January 2026) were unsuccessful due to a non-responsive registration website.
On January 25th, 2026, I made the discussion about .o domains, explaining how it is impossible to register any .o domains. After joining the IRC, it was found out that two of the Tier 1 DNS servers responsible for the .o TLD, ns9 and ns11, were down since April 7th, 2025, and April 18th, 2024, respectively. Both are operated by Jonah Aragon (jonah). Despite attempts to raise the issue, no clarification was communicated regarding the status of the .o TLD.
Subsequently, Jeff Taylor (shdwdrgn) opened a broader discussion about transferring inactive TLDs, where .o was listed. In that thread, I volunteered to assume operational responsibility for the .o TLD. Although there was a response in the discussion by jonah, the operational status of .o was not directly addressed.
After we did not receive any response about .o TLD, I began to work on a Tier 1 DNS server and an autoregistration website for .o domains. So far, the Tier 1 DNS server is ready and put into operation, and the autoregistration website is nearly complete; only a few extra features and the actual link with the Tier 1 DNS server remain as remaining work.
Current Features of the Autoregistration Website:
•Account Login/Register
•Domain Lookup
•Domain Registration with 1-4 nameservers to point
•Domains can be registered for up to one year. However, domain owners can extend this time for another year if the expiry of the domain is 30 days or less. This extension is unlimited.
•Ability to register domains using the OpenNIC TLD ecosystem with HTTP or using an ICANN-based domain with HTTPS.
•2FA Protection, CAPTCHA, session hijacking protections, and security implementations for the HTTP case.
•Some old browser capabilities (This one not tested yet)
The Tier 1 DNS server is hosted on this IP: 79.110.234.30 and this FQDN: u.emreoyun.tr. It is hosted by Batihost Internet Services, and the machine is located in Bursa, Türkiye.
An unofficial and temporary copy of the autoregistration website can be found at: https://dot-o.eo.gl/.
The system will be reset upon official transition, so current registrations are for testing purposes only.
I believe there is a demand for the .o TLD, and I would like to attempt operating it by combining my academic background in computer engineering with my practical experience in server management.
Before taking any formal steps, I would like to ask the community: Would there be support for transferring operational responsibility of the .o TLD to a new active maintainer? Are there concerns or requirements considerations I should address first? I welcome feedback, suggestions, and constructive criticism from the community.
Best Regards,
EMREOYUN
