Honestly I didn't know those tools were available from _javascript_.  Implementing both from the user's own location would certainly give the most accurate overall information.  Lowest hops plus lowest ping-time would probably paint a good picture of the network map in their area.  It is worth looking into as I add more functionality to the map.

To me it seems, as if you lost sight of the forest for the trees (lets
hope I translated this right and no abusive meaning comes out).

You need the shortest network path? Try traceroute.
If you want network path information for selecting "best" Tier2
resolvers, a small Java applet using ICMP-Echo and Traceroute would do
the trick, IMHO. I did something compareable using netselect (a cli
tool) just today to select the "best" vpn endpoint.

The result looks along those lines:
chicago.perfect-privacy.com            206 ms  12 hops   85% ok
(85/100) [  534]
195.254.134.194                        127 ms  16 hops   79% ok
(79/100) [  418]
195.254.134.10                         149 ms  15 hops   79% ok
(79/100) [  472]
cairo.perfect-privacy.com              177 ms  16 hops   78% ok
(77/98) [  587]
cyberjaya.perfect-privacy.com          492 ms  14 hops   86% ok
(78/90) [ 1363]
