Here's a response I received from one of the SFD organizers (forwarded
to the list with his permission). My original query is at the
bottom...

event?

Dear Brian,

So in fact you want to do our job? ;-)

SFD events are 'real' events happening in real physical places where
people show up in person, and not virtual ones. So if you do organize
something people need to find the place and attend.

Now if you have several teams in various locations under the same
'banner' (We could compare that to Ubuntu Loco Teams) I recommend that
you register one team per physical location where the teams will be
registered under OpenNIC <City> name eventually (or whatever generic
name you may come up with) and located at the right place on the wiki
(and the map). Doing another way will confuse people and force them to
search for a double index or look at events which are only virtual
(like advertising your own products...).

If you want to promote SFD to your community because you think there
is a relationship with what you do that should be done on your own
infrastructure and not ours.

Now if you want to join our efforts to promote SFD globally we have a
global marketing list for that and we also partner with some
non-profit organizations on specific tasks such as the FSF and the
FSFE to name just 2 to get things done. That would be another way for
our 2 organizations to work together. For information in the past we
have received either small amounts of money from those non-profit
organizations or they have helped us to get some materials shipped in
their own areas or documentation created. The fact that we share
similar perspectives on software is of importance of course.

I hope I have clarified all the questions you may have and that you
now better understand how SFI/SFD operates. Please do consider what
the best model is for you and your organization and get back to us.

Looking forward to reading from you.

Kind regards,

Fred

participants would either contact other local groups to offer their
assistance, or even organize their own events.
