There are still options... For instance, a D-Link wifi such as the WRT54G lets you install different software, and you would be able to set up your DNS and tunnel on there. Also, the ssh tunnel under Linux is done directly on the client machine - no firewall is needed. This will probably also be true under Windows. I know I have seen articles on using puTTY to initialize an ssh tunnel, so there are probably other options available.
