Technically, if you are querying an ICANN domain, you have no choice but to go through ICANN servers.  The OpenNic root zone combines everything together to ensure that you are always routed in the proper direction.

Actually you were right the first time... You want to AXFR the root zone
so you get a complete copy of it.  If you just query for NS records, you
get a list of the accepted nameservers, but you don't have your own
complete local copy of the zone.
