I would like to see OpenNIC get more popular but I also feel we
shouldn't be plunging into things just to make it as big as possible
as quick as possible. We're still learning about issues (e.g. the T1
issues in a recent email) that can crop up and don't have any solid
direction on how to handle them. When operators drop out without
warning and servers have problems it makes it hard to really recommend
OpenNIC as an alternative.
However, I feel like OpenNIC as a whole is making progress and is on
its way to being a truly viable alternative for many folks. I think as
it matures it will naturally grow some on its own, at which point the
larger group supporting it would make it easier to continue that
growth. But again, that doesn't mean we should make "getting really
big" our goal. Our goal, in my opinion, should be to provide a good
quality alternative DNS. If we can do that I don't see why growth
couldn't follow.
