Think about zones this way:

mydomain.com. relates to test.mydomain.com. as . (root zone) relates
to eq.

Once you've got your zone for your ICANN domain referring to a further
zone on a subdomain of that ICANN domain, it's just a matter of
translating it to a TLD on top of a root zone. That's how I'm testing
the registry software (which, BTW, I am still chugging away at) I
talked about on the reddit.

One gotcha that I've noticed is that either DNS or BIND assumes (or
states, though I can't find it in the RFCs I've looked through) that
each nameserver named in an NS record is unique along the resolution
chain. Either that, or it's my local configuration being weird,
causing "bad (horizontal) references". That was my stumbling block, at
least.
