The extent of my knowledge of DNS is as followed:

The root zone (".") contains a list of all possible TLDs, is administered by
ICANN/IANA and it uses their name servers. In here are entries for .com,
.net, etc. and the nameservers that serves authoritative information about
the TLD in question. The proper glue for the TLD name servers exists here as
well.

The name server for .com has a zone file for "com" and is authoritative. This
zone has entries for all the domains in the .com tld (insert insane numbers
here). The entries in the com zone generally have glue and point to
nameservers.
