Another update regarding grep.geek... I discovered that the version of software I had installed did not properly drop dead links after the specified period, resulting in the much-commented problem with the search results.  I got the engine updated to the latest version last week, greatly reducing the overall size of the index.

Last night I also cleaned up the interface a bit, completely removing all the option buttons from the left column.  The page should be working much better now.

Just an FYI - I run grep.geek (and yes I'm aware of the dead-link issue).  I originally started out using sphider, but when you start getting up into the millions of pages cached sphider really starts to choke out.  I had to move to something that could handle a larger database and am currently running mnogosearch.  Even so, I have to put some rules in place to limit the overall number of pages that it catalogs.

I think the worst problems with grep.geek right now could be eliminated if I could find a patch to collapse multiple hits from a single site (much like google does) so you only view all the hits from that site if you choose.  I just haven't had any time to work on it in months. :-(
