The modern Usenet is based on NNTP, which is based on email. Usenet has
a different mindset and history than regular email, and have a different
approach to spam control, but the formats and protocols are very similar.

You can accomplish anything with email, if you bastardize the protocol
hard enough. For instance, people are forcing web servers to perform
webfinger, webwhois, webthis and webthat.

They are recreating Usenet with RSS and Atom feeds, PubSubHubBub and
Salmon. Usenet was doing friend-feeds before it was cool, before
Facebook and Twitter was a twinkle in their fathers' eyes.

Sure, in theory, you could do it with email, but why fix what ain't
broke? If you were going to do it with email, you'd gain nothing.
