Dot pirate isn't on the opennic homepage because nobody has updated that information in awhile.  Also note that .ing and .micro have ceased to exist (I assume they are also still on the homepage).

There's not really a classification of the TLDs other that this... OpenNIC has a certain list of TLDs, and some of the other providers that we peer with have their own TLDs.  We provide pointers in the root zone to reach our peer's domains to make it easy for everyone involved.

Within OpenNIC, the various TLDs are stored in a number of ways.  Each admin is free to handle their zone as they see fit, but a number of those zones have changed ownership recently and we have been trying to collect the information for them in a single location -- that's why you see a large number of the TLDs available under reg.for.free.

I take it this list is the one that is on the
register-for-free site, and also on the reg.dyn page.

There are 14 TLDs listed on the main OpenNic pages,
but that list does not include dot pirate. So it
looks like there are at least three classifications.

Can someone explain the organization of the TLDs and
how they're grouped?

In case anyone is curious, here are the final totals for domains
registered under the TLDs stored in LDAP. These totals do NOT include
reserved domains (such as example, localhost, reg).

dyn -- 52
free -- 62
geek -- 82
indy -- 6
oss -- 60
parody -- 8
pirate -- 97
