I had the same question as you have when I joined OpenNIC and I start
discuss "opennic project promotion":

I don`t know you read that discussion or not. If not you can find it

For now discussion of this subj faded away and it was started on "The
world is cruel, because the world is cruel" and "we all die" :)
But than discussion changed and the main thoughts was:
- need to do browser exten for easy access to OpenNIC TLDs
- need to do CA for SSL
- need more content
- need to do more TLD to attract more people and content (like .game or
.games)
- need more people in project so can fight with ICANN for TLDs and do
not give up if they register similar TLD
- or need to have backup plan for TLDs that ICANN can take
You add new item to this list:
- need attract IT forums/communities
I agree that OpenNIC need to do something about promotion and
recognizability.
