The IRC channel (#OpenNIC on Freenode) may be a better place for
getting help with something like that. Generally all you have to do is
change the DNS servers the system is using. Using a VPN shouldn't
affect it, you'll just want to choose OpenNIC servers that are near
the remote endpoint of the VPN.
