I just tried it myself with my leftover (working) gmail account and I do not 
get an email from opennicprogject.org. Subscribing to the mailing list 
reveals that emails from lists.opennicproject.org domain ends up in the spam 
directory.

Using a different email provider (Yandex) puts the registration email in the 
inbox, immediately.

Very strange.
