Counterpoint, The person who is young(ish) and activly devliops a functional
micronation, spending hours on it and the intricate details is the exact same
person who would also be interested in non ICANN names. Both are geeks who
obsesses over specific details and like unique democratized systems. also if
no one uses it, then no one uses it and I only throw away my money.

Personally I dislike the term clearnet in the context, as for me it evokes
thoughts of the darknet which isn't really what opennic is. It's also not the
clearnet but i think there needs to be a better word for it haha. Anyway, Yes
of the few that I have spoken to they understand the differences in it and
fully accept that it's not "standard" that's why i don't believe many of them
will ever use the service other than a few announcements and operating a
mirror site on their specific .micro domain. However if you're running a
micro nation and only ever use google and youtube then setting up your PC for
use on openNIC isn't that much different for the end user if they only visit
their .micro site and others.

I explained it to them more as a mission rather than anything substantive. In
the same way they make treaties and science pacts it's more symbolic for this
usecase. Also I gave a decent anology comparing it to Mastodon in it's
purpose and unique use case.

I will admit I am dissapointed in how quite it is and I do find it an oddity
but I like it. It ultimatly doesn't affect anything else that i'm doing and I
can visit .geek sites and also disney+ so there's no real downside to using
it that I can find. I got into Linux last year because a work colleague
wouldn't shut up about it and i'm having an amazing time with the OS and
learning about it. I look at OpenNIC in the same way, It's small, unique,
barely used but it's fun. And heck if i have fun, that's all that matters :)
