We have had previous discussions about the US government's questionable practices of globally confiscating domain names regardless of the country of origin and lack of any formal legal proceedings. I have been trying to determine the best method for OpenNic to override the DNS entries that cause this to happen...
1) Attempting to add entries directly to the root zone -- While this would have been by far the easiest method to solve the problem, unfortunately it just doesn't seem to work.
2) Creating zone entries to set up a tier2 servers as a slave for the affected domain zones -- This method requires that any participating tier2 servers add an include file to their configuration, then download this file from a source on a regular basis.
Either method allows for individual servers to opt-in to this experiment. The goal is to allow any server operator who is interested to include these redirects on their server. The servers hosting the redirects will be clearly stated so that end-users may choose if they wish to participate. The ONLY changes that should ever occur are when sites are confiscated by the US government and there is no due-process to allow the site owners their rights... In cases like this, I will implement records which point back to the original site owner's DNS servers for the domain in question.
An example of this is autocd.com. From what I can tell, the site is owned and hosted from Russia, yet the domain has shut down world-wide without any regard for local laws or procedures. This will be the first site brought up during the test (not because I have any ties with the domain, but rather because I found it in a list and it was easy to remember and type while I was doing local testing).
My own server at 216.87.84.211 will of course be hosting the redirected entries. If you use this IP for DNS resolution and you do not approve of these overrides, please change your DNS entries to another server which is not participating.
If you are the owner of any domains, or can get feedback from any owners whose domains have been confiscated, please let me know. What I need for each domain is the IPs of their nameservers that still resolve the conflicted domain, and access to AXFR a copy of the domain zone so that I may properly slave it.
