For the time being, I am personally hosting the file that contains the overrides, and I will be manually updating this list. The potential for abuse of this data is *huge*, and quite frankly I'm not comfortable with relying on web security to try and create a 'safe' web-based automated system for compiling this data. Taking this one step further, at some point I may even post checksums to this mailing list for the files that I generate, just to allow folks the option of offsite verification of the files.

As for obtaining the original records, I believe the best method is locating the original dns host as quickly as possible and acquiring the DNS info (either by slaving the zone if possible, or at least getting the IP info for the original website). In my test case with autocd.com, a google search led me to their original DNS server, which in fact is still hosting the domain. This is certainly our best-case scenario.

Great initiative!

I think we have to discuss on what domains would be overriden, how to find
safe and complete original records, and how to safely publish the list of
entries to override for T2s.

If we make mistakes, or if the system is corrupted somehow, and we start
overriding valid records, this could be misunderstood or considered as an
aggression by the domains' owners, and that would be a shame and would be
negative for the project's reputation!

When these questions have an answer, I will volunteer to participate!

I'll get the source for the include file posted once I have it ready. :-)
I didn't want to make this live right away, just in case anyone using my
server wanted to back away, as this will create entries which deliberately
conflict with data listed in the official root zone.

I will probably add the new configuration to 216.87.84.211 this evening
(about 12 hours from now). I will also need help with determining what
domains should be added to the list, and collecting the information for
those domains.

tier2 servers add an include file to their configuration, then download
this file from a source on a regular basis.

"source"?

Either method allows for individual servers to opt-in to this

In.

An example of this is autocd.com.

My own server at 216.87.84.211.

Adding 216.87.84.211 to my list of resolvers, autocd.com resolves to
74.81.170.110
