There are people on IRC most of the time. I monitor
it about 12 hours of the day. Whoever you "advised"
you that it is not worth going there is a goof.

If you don't know "what you would have said" on IRC
something is wrong with this. IRC is a place to have
a conversations and it is more casual and easier to
throw ideas around than email is.
