OpenNIC is a thing I've found very interesting and that I support, in
concept. Decentralizing as much of the Internet is a laudable goal, however
it seems to me that much of the OpenNIC TLD's and tier 1 servers have been
dead for a relatively long time and should be either moved so a different
operator hosts them or consolidated under one of the few still active (as
annoying as that is to my decentralization beliefs), as it's objectively
better for it to be available and more centralized than dead and
decentralized. Besides, the project in itself feels like it's halfway in the
grave and needs people to start caring about it again. E.g.: I've been
subscribed to this list for the past few years and have seen about 3 threads,
and out of those only 1 received any activity. Something definitely should be
done but at this point I'm not sure what or even who is even still operating
or caring at all about this project.
