I agree with Martin.

To extend your analogy further, you might not get invited to the bar,
but you shouldn't miss out on important business-critical decisions and
discussions. These should be discussed using more formal means; by email
or in a meeting.

IRC is a great tool for informal chat but a more formalised and
recordable communication method should be used for making decisions.
It's important that the history and discussion be kept and that it's
open to all. This could be on this list. It could be on a forum or it
could be on a purpose-designed collaboration platform like Loomio.

I do use IRC, but I don't have the time to lurk on an IRC channel all
day every day just in case someone wants to start a conversation that
results in an important decision being made. I use IRC and IM to
communicate with colleagues at work, but we certainly do not make
business critical decisions using this communication method, we'll call
a meeting.
