Or maybe it's not even 42 registry. I am a bit confused, since I don't know how to find where this comes from.

Ok the "protection" was not from OpenNIC but from 42 registry. My DNS serves both.

I'm not seeing them protected on my box, instead pointing at nameservers
of the FBI’s Cyber Initiative and Resource Fusion Unit

Last I heard it's a manual process, and not yet in the works (but I'm
about a couple of weeks behind on things here, trying to catch up,
hopefully I'm wrong on that)
