Not if availability monitoring and management of network services are the 
goal. This is widely the same problem as with smokeping or cacti etc.

May be that i heavily misunderstand what kind of "monitoring" here is wanted.

As i've understand right availability is the goal - and maybe secondary any 
performance monitoring of the DNS machines (what is still not done with the 
current smokeping setup as it just gives some special latency parameters 
widely useless in practice except if you see some "nothing" in a graph - 
could be interpreted as "down" of a machine, a service or a whole network 
before or a overload, timeout, maintenance window etc.

Measuring DNS performance is another thing - but can't be nearly done with 
the current smokeping setup. It may nice to see for someone that some machine 
in the net gets some response times to some DNS requests - but thinking 
deeper this is widely useless in practice for most usage scenarios too.

btw: *every* halfway professional network monitoring system allows easy 
implementations of "plugins".
