but att i just see ICMP pings only (what is not fully useful for OpenNIC i 
assume). 

I could recommend to add i.e. DNS service checks with the "random" DNS check 
script / plugin:
http://www.koders.com/perl/fidC0EC2418B6383244555A8BBA632174AD30947C7A.aspx

to check randomly against a predefined list (textfile) with OpenNIC domains / 
requests. Requires check_dns.
