Not a problem. The hints file is essentially just a list of root nameservers the recursor will query.

You can grab an up to date one by running "dig . NS @IP > root.cache" (replace IP with a Tier1 IP address). Then just set the hint file in your recursor config and you should now be opennic compatible.

Thanks for the suggestion, I think I will run the pdns recursor and have it forward quieries, can you give me some more hints on how I can combine a normal root hints file with the opennic root hints ?
I got http://www.opennic.oss/bindtools/zone.opennic.txt but am a bit confused as to how I would change the format to root.hints

Its a very convoluted way of doing it in my opinion. It might be better to put bind in front of pdns and then have it forward queries for authoritative domains to pdns.

Alternatively you could dispense with bind altogether and use the pdns recursor as the t2. Then you can decide to have the auth server in front or behind, whichever suits.

I've been over the situation before with the guys on the pdns mailing list and there is no easy way to use opennic with pdns, but there are methods.

Do I need to initiate zone transfers or something to get local copies of
all the dns records ?

gmsql, that is why I am using zone2sql, zone2sql converts bind configs
to sql that can be used in pdns,
that is why the t2 is running bind and the t1 is running pdns, the t2
gets all the dns data, then I run zone2sql and import to sql.
The only part that is not working right now is zone2sql, but its not
working because the data is not there.
So basically I need to convert the t2 into a t1 I think. But I am not
sure howto do that, as the guide I was following is:
http://www.opennic.oss/bindtools/INSTALL.txt

and none if it is giving any errors.
I only get errors when I run:
zone2sql --gmysql --named-conf=/var/named/zone.opennic --verbose >
import.sql

died because of STL error: Unable to open file
'./opennic/slave/pirate.zone': No such file or directory

but I checked and the /var/named/opennic/slave/ directory does not
exsist, so it is only getting the dns entries from other t1's.

What backend are you using in pdns? It will not function in the same

Subject: [opennic-discuss] Odd error

So I am running a t2 on 216.86.150.187 currently, and I am trying to run
zone2sql so I can convert the zone data into a format that I can use in
powerDNS, as I want to use powerDNS to run a tier1. It seems to be
working and it resolves domains however
Domain oss lives in file './opennic/slave/oss.zone'
Domain oz lives in file './opennic/slave/oz.zone'
Domain parody lives in file './opennic/slave/parody.zone'
Domain pirate lives in file './opennic/slave/pirate.zone'
died because of STL error: Unable to open file
'./opennic/slave/pirate.zone': No such file or directory

It is not creating any slave zone data, it only points to the other
t1's. What do I need to do to get it to do full replication so I can run
a tier1 ?
