I'll offer another real world example of this kind of separation of
entities for liability protection.
I worked for http://www.firstclass.com for many years starting back
when it was SoftArc Inc. In those days, we, in the engineering group,
actually worked under a company called Tridem Labs Inc. The two
companies operated in such a way that all of the intellectual property
belonged to the engineering group under the Tridem Labs company. All
sales and external contracts of any kind where done through SoftArc Inc.
This was done this way to protect the core intellectual property in
the case of any law suits. In the worst case, the SoftArc Inc company
would suffer, but the intellectual property and the engineering group
(the crown jewel of the whole operation) would be untouchable.
You just have to be careful under those circumstance to keep a clear
separation and not to mix business where it's not supposed to be mixed.
