I believe slave is already the preferred method on opennic. Or at least, when I was reading the wiki and other docs, there was definate slant towards it. Its meant to be smoother/faster in terms of response times for an end user.

Although since we use powerdns we have to use the hint method. We then overcome any response/speed issues with a reasonably sized cache.

Subject: [opennic-discuss] Hint or slave?

Hi OpenNic,

Some time ago I made a quick poll on this list to get some details about the config of the most reliable T2 servers. The answers I got seemed to indicate these T2 were not configured as slave but as hint.

On the other hand, on the wiki, the recommended config for running a robust T2 is as a slave.

I have read some doc about the slave and hint servers, and it looks like the difference is tiny. It is all about being authoritative or not, but at the end, they are very similar in their behaviour.

However the hint config is more simple, hence maybe more reliable.

The question is, should we favor hint vs slave?
