The differences, though small, are fundamental. Individuals and organizations setting up recursive servers for their own use should answer that question on their own. For our own recursive servers (tier 2 servers), I'd favor hints over slaving the root zone. It requires less disk space and is the default configuration for the reference implementation (BIND). It's marginally simpler to configure, replacing one file compared to editing another that likely has other configuration in it.
