Yes actually I am reading your shiny new wiki pages (nicely written btw) and I saw you are recommending the slave config for public T2 servers, that's why I am asking.
The difference in behaviour is minimal because as far as I have read, both servers will query the T1 when they don't have the answer, then store or cache it locally, and answer as authoritative. A difference in behaviour does appear when the T1 is offline though, where the slave continues to operate for a longer period of time. I have just read a benchmark concluding there is not much difference in traffic, but the response time can be a bit better on slave than hint.
I am sticking to my slave config for now, as you recommend. The difference in behaviour is minimal because as far as I have read, both servers will query the T1 when they don't have the answer, then store or cache it locally, and answer as authoritative. I don't know if you have seen these, but I've been working on some new T2 wiki pages to break up the different types of configs onto separate pages, and expand on the advantages of each. The pages can be found at:
http://wiki.opennicproject.org/Tier2ConfigBindHint
http://wiki.opennicproject.org/Tier2ConfigBindSlave
http://wiki.opennicproject.org/Tier2Security
I will be rewriting the current config page as a front-end pointing to these various other pages.
But in regards to your question, it doesn't make any sense that the hints configs would be more reliable than the slave configs... I would expect exactly the opposite to be true! Keep in mind that the servers configed with hints files are doing nothing but pointing users to *other* tier-2 or tier-1 servers to complete their query, so you end up relying on a greater number of servers being operational to get an answer. On the other hand, a slaved server has all of the zone files stored locally, so it is able to directly answer any queries coming in. Sure cache size can be important, but you can set your cache to a custom size on any of the config types.--------

Hi OpenNic,
Some time ago I made a quick poll on this list to get some details about the config of the most reliable T2 servers. The answers I got seemed to indicate these T2 were not configured as slave but as hint.
On the other hand, on the wiki, the recommended config for running a robust T2 is as a slave.
I have read some doc about the slave and hint servers, and it looks like the difference is tiny. It is all about being authoritative or not, but at the end, they are very similar in their behaviour.
However the hint config is more simple, hence maybe more reliable.
The question is, should we favor hint vs slave?
