Just an FYI - I run grep.geek (and yes I'm aware of the dead-link issue).  I originally started out using sphider, but when you start getting up into the millions of pages cached sphider really starts to choke out.  I had to move to something that could handle a larger database and am currently running mnogosearch.  Even so, I have to put some rules in place to limit the overall number of pages that it catalogs.

I think the worst problems with grep.geek right now could be eliminated if I could find a patch to collapse multiple hits from a single site (much like google does) so you only view all the hits from that site if you choose.  I just haven't had any time to work on it in months. :-(

Hello Peter,

Thanks for the reply and encouragement!

Yes, sorry I forgot about the link: http://www.mcalinden.me.uk/opennic.html
Please let me know of any inaccuracies when you get time to read it.

The search system is http://www.sphider.eu/ - a PHP/MySQL search
system that is a bit outdated. In the future I plan to move to
something a bit more sophisticated, but at the moment it seems to do
the job. The database kept crashing during indexing, but after adding
some swap space to the server, the problem seems to be fixed.

I read somewhere on the OpenNIC website about posting at the
top/bottom of previous emails. Which is best practice? This is the
first time I have used a mailing list.

Hi Calum!

Wow, what a wonderful e-mail to read! :-)

I have recently discovered OpenNIC and have been following the
discussions on the mailing list.  I find the project very interesting;
Great!

I decided to write an article about it on my website.
Just skimmed it, looks good, will go back later and read properly!
Couldn't see a direct link in your e-mail???
http://www.mcalinden.me.uk/opennic.html for those that want a look.

The current OpenNIC search engines seem to either not work, or contain
99% dead links.
O.M.G. yes, it's awful!

I decided to have a go at creating my own search
engine: http://seek.geek
WOW!!! That is awesome! Looks lovely, just need to fully test it out!
What system have you used?

Great work Calum, thanks a lot! :-)

Peter
