I didn't intend to create such a big discussion over a small feature request
:)
Many (most?) ICANN domain registrars do offer optional multi-factor
authentication. One reason why I find it attractive is that it helps
prevent hacking at the very root; if someone gets control of your
domain they also have your email, which can be used to reset
passwords. After further consideration, I think it would be
unnecessary at this stage, and the use of the OpenNIC members system
for authentication would make it trickier to implement.

Does this make registrars that are not affiliated with any TLD possible?
Also, would there be any protection against other registrars modifying
data for domains they don't manage?
