Yeh fair enough, makes sense. I did take two very large examples which don't
compare well with a community of opennic's size. Then again, i've seen forums
work for smaller communities as well. I guess at the end of the day, it's
personal preference. I just prefer forums to lists‎, simple as that. Whether
one would work in practice, with opennic, I have no idea.

But regardless, back on topic, we still need a proper voting system in place
and i'm pretty sure (but correct me if i'm wrong)‎, most people would agree
this should be independent of the list? If not a forum, perhaps something
like open atrium or maybe even something as simple as user voice (or whatever
it's called).

Not just noobs. I do sometimes leave a tab open for facebook, but not
always, I certainly do not leave tabs open for the dozen or so fora that
I am registered on. But I do get list traffic from all the lists I am
on, and I still receive it when I am away from my desk as well as when I
do not happen to have a browser active. I can even see an approximation
to the html content some people use, thanks to autoview via elinks. If
a thread becomes uninteresting, I don't bother to open the contents, but
I can easily keep abreast of what is happening in opennic as on all the
other lists, whereas I only see the activity on the fora (forums if you
are in the US) if I have a problem and take the trouble to log on.

So IMHO, mailing lists are far preferable.
