People are more than happy to check into Facebook why not our forum?

The biggest answer is critical mass. Facebook has new stuff from hundreds of friends at any given time. Multiple groups to interact with and engage. Their posts will be seen by far more people.

The forum might not have new posts each time a person comes by. The forum doesn't accomplish multiple things at once. A person is already going to Facebook for the other things too, a person basically has to make a detour for our forums.

On the other hand Email is something everyone checks.. Usually daily.

XDA also has critical mass, and a lot of there forum communities died before XDA finally succeeded. It takes a ton of daily commitment to make a forum successful

I take your point but i'm not sure I agree. In this day and age, most people are more than happy to check into facebook at least once a day, why not a forum?

Take the xda forums as an example, probably the biggest android hub on the Web. I own a nexus 5 and I dip in and out occasionally, as do many other users. Its simple to get involved and much easier to get to know people, learn what role they play in the community etc. Plus, with the massive array of phone apps these days, such as tapatalk, you can get notifications straight to your phone and only for things your interested in.

For a new user it's also easier to navigate historical threads since they're categorised in multiple ways. Also much easier to search.

I realise i'm going on a bit of a rant here and we're probably way off topic now, so sorry. You might be able to tell, i'm not a fan of mailing lists.

I find that forums actually are /harder/ for non-tech users and people who are only passively interested in a project. It requires dedication of checking a specific website frequently for updates and remembering that it exists. Email allows even the noobs who don't understand anything else to do the one basic thing that pretty much anyone on the internet knows how to do.

Hi,

I personally have actually no idea, yet. I'm primary listening and get in touch to the others.

Kind regards,

A forum has many benefits and would technically be more private, since only mods or admins can see ip addresses. Its also much easier to moderate and I don't have to get reams of spam when there's an argument. :p

I used to run a large community on IPB and there was a massive amount of functionality for voting. I wouldn't allow people who weren't registered on the forum to vote but i'd go for anonymous voting.

It would make it far easier to monitor things, manage users, control voting etc. Best of all, it's public and easily accessible to anyone. Heck, i'll even host it for you for free!
