Either opt-in or opt-out, the use of a TXT record would certainly make it easy to automate the procedure.  The advantage of using this for opt-in is that by specifically listing the domain and subdomain you want included, it reduces the chance that a desired subdomain is missed during the record scrape.

Rethinking this, what about making it opt-in? That way people who are
interested can do it and those not, don't have to actively think about
it and get caught out.

$ORIGIN link.$TLD
@	TXT	"linkme"

Something like the above could work? No need for an A record, just a TXT
record for link.TLD. The presence of such a thing means add it to the
link DNS zone. This is a win-win as it means only active domains are
listed on our ICANN facing page.
