I cannot find any press release or any other information to verify .free
availability via ICANN.

On one specific site, they are "pre-applying" but only acknowledge that
the Tld is submitted for review, but not whether it IS being reviewed.

Can anyone point to definitive ICANN info?

How about moving our .free domains to a different TLD, maybe creating
a new one such as .open, rather than dropping them? I'm the creator

TLD.

In the past we have always left it up to a member vote, however the
vote has always leaned towards remaining compatible with ICANN.
That doesn't mean this time won't be different.  If we vote to
retain our own version of .free, it means nobody using opennic DNS
servers can reach the icann .free websites.  Unfortunately there is
no middle ground here, it has to be one way or the other.

It was mentioned on IRC today that the .free TLD has been taken
over by ICANN, which puts opennic in conflict.  Can anyone
confirm if this is actually the case?

If this is true, then we only have two options... retain our TLD
and conflict with ICANN, or drop our TLD and all of the domains
underneath it (there are currently 150 registered domains).
