Why does ICANN not have .geek .epic .oss .oz ...? I guess, the answer to 
both questions is the same.

Well, on second thought, maybe the answer differs: ICANN does not have 
these domains, because they cannot make money from it. And opennic does 
have them, because someone (possibly without monetary incetives) wanted 
them.

May I ask, what you think opennic should be if not 'independent dns 
roots'? That's the whole point of the project - with all the implications 
and playgrounds this opens. (independent dns resolution of ICANN domains, 
new, possibly experimental domains, peering with other extranous tlds, 
etc.)
