yes but with the hint: "domains of these TLDs can only be reached by using our DNS resolvers, and services that need the availability in the global ICANN DNS are not possible", I'd say; and the list of services not possible with OpenNIC domains is increasing;

similar to this: someone sells model trains with an exotic gauge, and everybody looks strange why these don't fit to their own model railway system;

the argument with 'independent dns roots' is causing this 'parallel universe' and why exact is this needed?

Why does ICANN not have .geek .epic .oss .oz ...? I guess, the answer to both questions is the same.

Well, on second thought, maybe the answer differs: ICANN does not have these domains, because they cannot make money from it. And opennic does have them, because someone (possibly without monetary incetives) wanted them.

would there also be TLDs be possible which are are operated be ICANN? but for free (in the meaning of 'gratis')?

the problems would be the same as with e.g. .geek and naming collisions needn't be in this case; just think of this: someone wants  e.g. domain.tld  which would be available in ICANN-DNS but is not willing to pay 100$ every year for it;

May I ask, what you think opennic should be if not 'independent dns roots'?

there are several things in the "ICANN-world", that are missing; e.g. domains, 2nd/3rd-level domains for free (in the meaning of 'gratis'); this could be a thing, which opennic could deal with, without the need of 'independent dns roots'?

I think on things like DynDNS, why not having a TLD .dyndns, and users can select their own domain for dyndns use within this namespace?

I guess there are more things, that could/might be operated by opennic without independend dns roots;

Walter

p.s. I don't think opennic is bad, I think on the not available/working services/things in comparison to ICANN-domains;
