I too am all for this... Also, think of things like ".cat" which is only for websites in the Catalan language.

I was about to say "I bet ICANN would never approve a regional gTLD
request," but I'm glad I didn't, as a Google search quickly proved me

I'm all for this.  After all, this is what OpenNIC is all about.
