I don't know, but when I read:

"OpenNIC (a.k.a. “The OpenNIC Project”) is an organization of
dedicated volunteers who run an alternative DNS network."

I think in terms of people who I know who are internet using, freedom
loving, activists, and non-activists, and I think, how are they going
to interpret that?

Firstly, none of them even likely even know what a DNS is, let alone
it's potential significance in preserving (or removing) internet freedom.

Secondly, even if they do understand the concept of DNS, from this
statement, how can they determine what it's going to do for them, or
if it even applies to them at all?

The real question when trying to formulate a 'mission statement' or
'tagline' should probably be something more like 'What does OpenNIC do
for the 'customer'"?

Using the term 'customer' loosely, maybe we aught to call them 'end
user' instead? Just trying to put it marketing terms.
