This seems to be a very common missunderstanding. The Internet(s) and the 
World Wide Web are not the same thing.

As I understand it, and please do correct me if I'm wrong, the Internet is 
short for 'Inter Connected Networks' and is a physical thing, cables, wirles, 
routers switches etc. All owned by many people and organizations, most profit 
making. For instance the telecommunications companies of the world.

The W.W.W. is a system that runs on the Internets and was openly created and 
given to humanity by Sir Tim Berners-Lee with the idea of freedom, openness 
and collaboration.

This last point is why OpenNIC is so important, because vested interests are 
try to 'steal' this gift and subvert it.

OpenNIC is an expansion of the W.W.W. in that it provides T.L.D.s not a 
seperate part of anything, least of all the Internet.

A problem (and I may be wrong here) is that the subversion has made people 
blind to organizations like OpenNIC, who in essence, are the embodiment of 
the original idea.

I wonder what Sir Tim thinks of OpenNIC, has anyone read anything he has said 
regarding OpenNIC?

So in my mind OpenNIC...

*Provides D.N.S. resolvers
*Provides T.L.D.s

All in and open and democratic way, for free.

An additional question and one I'd love to hear others thoughts on is how 
well does OpenNIC do what ever it does and can we do 'it' better?
