I'd argue that the only recognized way of donating to OpenNIC currently would be to donate time & resources. That could involve just being an active member and participating in conversation via this mailing list or the IRC or forming your own Tier-2 servers or making helpful suggestions to better the community as a whole.
Financial is not the only way to donate... but if you must, I'd recommend using it to donate resources instead. e.g. a somewhat decent VPS for a Tier-2 server could be had for probably as little as $10/mo.
