People rarely change... to win them over you either have to cater to what they’re used to and are comfortable using, or devise something so useful and intuitive that people will switch to it without much thought. Generally speaking the former is a lot easier to achieve than the latter, since the former only requires a lot of effort (e.g. building a two-way gateway between web forum and ML), whereas the latter requires a Steve Jobs mind as well as lots of effort.

Someone earlier mentioned that a mailing list to forum interface was attempted in the past and was a disaster... I wonder why?

Incidentally I saw a one-way forum to ML plugin for phpBB (forum posts auto-posted to ML), but not many attempts are true 2-way integration, where ML-only users can also transparently participate with forum users and vice versa. In fact ideally it shouldn’t really matter how you choose to participate and you should even be able to alternate between the forum and the ML.

This may sound easy at first, but don’t be fooled: the threading in MLs needs to work (next/prev message IDs?) as well as subject line tagging needs to be consisent. Otherwise I would imagine anyone using any kind of email filtering for this list to manage conversation threads will be very unhappy.

I’ll try and dig up history on this tomorrow to see what was missing, unless someone else with more organizational memory than me cares to point out the relevant discussions of a previous failure(s) in the ML. Maybe throw up a wiki page on what’s needed, what was attempted, and where the pitfalls were.

Yes it's a dead forum. That is why the
moderators also stopped going there. This
is my point. People simply are not willing
to change, even though some of us make an
effort. Such as we did with that forum.
After putting in a good effort for a period
of time, we just gave up.

However, I'm not talking to you when I say that
people need to actually make an effort when
it comes to starting a new communications channel
of some kind.

Everyone needs to understand that it is like
a party. One really does need to keep the
conversation going. It's not enough to just sit
there. At some point, a reasonable person just
gets up and leaves if, after a while, they find
that they are only one talking and everyone else
just sits there and stares.
