In a typical DHCP pool if you keep renewing before your lease expires then
you'll keep getting the same address. Since DOCISS type connections use DHCP
this is probably why you observe an infrequently changing address.

That makes sense. I kinda figured they were still using DHCP so not technically static, but I'm pretty confident that if I never changed my hardware (or MAC) my IP would never change.

If the ISP reboots _their_ router, and leases are not kept on non volatile
storage then you'll get another random address.

I would assume they'd have load balancer and failover redundancy to the point where DHCP data would be quite non-volatile but I could be wrong....my ISP has displayed ineptitude of that magnitude lol. But most worth their salt should have quite a bit of redundancy.

Some DHCP servers hash your
MAC instead of sequential or random assignment too.

That must be what's happening with my ISP. Mac change = IP change. I think that scheme is fairly common as I've seen it with a different ISP.

With the cheap option ADSL service at my house, not only to i get different
addresses, but also different IP blocks with different registered geo locations.

nice :)

I bet there is also another level of logging that probably maps IDs we can't
even see from the customer side :) deep in the DSLAM side of things,
especially on newer equipment.

sounds like good stuff to keep me up at night ;)
