I love using .free to connect to my personal server when I have control over my DNS lookups. I don't see opennic as a dead project at all; this is a truly free DNS platform and if ICANN ever began to censor "wrong think" and domain records were disappearing left and right, I like to think that we would become very popular.

Most of the existing TLDs seem to be poorly maintained, with no registration interfaces. There are very few if any "real" websites using OpenNIC domains and as far as alternative TLDs go I feel that OpenNIC is dead.
