The 501(c)(3) is about money and authority. It grants the government
authority over the money, and by extension, everything the money touches.

Now you have gotten this software through this foundation which has used
money that is under the authority of the government through the 501(c)(3).

The connection is through the money that funds the project, and the
501(c)(3) contract with the government that over sees the money.

The government cares a rats behind about the GPL and the GPL does not
care about the money.

PS. Sorry, I said I was done talking about this, but now I'm really done. :)

Personally, I'd rather do business with a 501(c)(3) organization than a corporation. For instance, I use a credit union than a bank. Also, aren't most open source projects these days formed by a organization of some sort?
