I can't speak for Mike, but IF I am right about a hunch, I believe it 
might have to do with jurisdiction. Becoming a 501:C3 places an 
organisation under American federal jurisdiction (IANAL, entertainment 
purposes only, etc).

Of course I could be completely wrong, and Mike can speak for himself. 
Speaking for myself, among the many factors why I joined OpenNIC was
