I can't speak for Mike, but IF I am right about a hunch, I believe it might have to do with jurisdiction. Becoming a 501:C3 places an organisation under American federal jurisdiction (IANAL, entertainment purposes only, etc).

Of course I could be completely wrong, and Mike can speak for himself. Speaking for myself, among the many factors why I joined OpenNIC was because of http://www.michaelgeist.ca/content/view/6359/135/ and http://yro.slashdot.org/story/12/03/06/1720230/us-asserts-super-jurisdiction-over-dot-com-dot-net-and-dot-org-domains
