...This is a very nice idea, but why not using OSM / OpenLayers / open
geodata service standards?

This is a really open and OS alternative to the Google Maps crap and - from
my view - a consequent (or the only fitting) solution for any open or open
source project.

You are able to offer i.e. server maps as your own data layer in standardized
formats / web services to any third party GIS or geo app. OSM offers real GIS
functionality and real / professional geodata service APIs where Google Maps
is still very far from (even if you might have some high cost license access
to them).

See i.e.
http://alpinres.org/portal/huetten/huettenkarte/index_ger.html

as just one small and very beginning example of usage of OSM with OpenLayers
with live data from an underlying database. There are many other examples out
in the OSM wikis etc..

With Google Maps you are fully bound to a very few fixed applications,
commercial APIs and licenses which are changing att to less and less costless
licensings.

sorry for the noise and just my two cents...

best regards,

Niels.
