FWIW I've reserved all the [TLD].o domains so if someone wants to seriously setup a backup or something using them I can give them access to those domains. (Or if a TLD operator wants theirs for whatever reason I can transfer it to them).

That being said, I don't think it's a great idea to use the .o domains for this purpose, it seems like a great way to make this project too centralized, and we're already too close to that line already.

I agree with .o as a backup and .onic/.opennic for ICANN.

I found this browser extension, Blockchain DNS ( https://blockchain-dns.info/ ), which lets you resolve Namecoin/Emercoin domains.
Maybe OpenNIC could have something similar to make the switch easier?

It's probably wiser to first reach out to communities similar to OpenNIC (open source or privacy?).

It's also ideal to create a ton of confusion - just like creating .games (vs. ICANN's .game) would be.

Realistically the *only* option for OpenNIC to actually be able to spread among "ordinary users" in huge numbers would in my mind be to buy a .opennic (or .onic or similar) TLD from ICANN, make it mirror our "backup" TLD (that I guess we have yet to create). That would then allow us to freely use links to OpenNIC domains in the ICANN-only web. We could then strongly suggest that people who own opennic domains and run (mainly web) services on them should put up a notice for every visitor who comes in through the ICANN domain informing them at least briefly about OpenNIC, our goals and how to connect to us.

Otherwise all the other ideas are nice, but by definition they cannot draw in any people as they won't be able to connect to us without the prior "hard" digging for information.

Just gonna throw it in here...

ICANN has .lgbt, but I know most of my friends prefer LGBTQ so this is another option for progression to more users.

I agree with Dan’s idea with using .o as a backup. I think it
would be very productive to do this.
