It's fair to say I haven't considered all of these aspects, and you probably don't need a Tier 2 server popping up, only to disappear in 6 months if I change jobs...

I'll consider this more carefully before I jump in to make sure it can be a long term arrangement.

This has been my thinking for some time: many of the TLDs that

have been proposed of late seem to me to have an air of being a

passing fancy on the part of the proposer. I call such

proposals "Rooney-Garland" ideas: raised by enthusiastic and

well-meaning people who haven't fully considered just how much

work and effort will be required to see it through.

This is a very important point. I'd be happy to see hundreds of

new TLDs but only if they are sure to survive. Longevity and

stability is important for all TLDs, of course. Being NFP and

cooperative the OpenNIC needs to be very wary of fatigue or

failure of anyone who commits to operating a Tier 1 or 2 server.

Having to change the root zone or its data too frequently or

having reduced redundancy does not work in OpenNIC's favour.

 

For example, I own and operate public Tier 3 DNS servers on four

continents for my own non-critical ICANN domains and though I

could offer them for OpenNIC service I don't because I'm under

no illusion of being able to do so indefinitely. If my DNS

servers go offline for any reason I'm only willing for that to

affect my own domains.
